A Comment from Jaci Burton on why she publishes with eBooks:
I first started my publishing career in e-books because I found a publisher that suited my writing style. And I found success with that publisher, and other publishers after that, even after I sold to NY print publishing. E-publishers continue to push the envelope and publish beyond what you can find in NY print publishing, whether it be genre or story type and length, which is why I continue to write for them. -Jaci Burton
Send a detailed synopsis (2 to 5 pages describing setting and main characters and outlining full plot, including resolution), the first three chapters and the final chapter of your manuscript via email as an attached file (doc or rtf format) to Submissions@ellorascave.com. (If it is a short story of 10-15,000 words, send the full manuscript.) Note: We are an e-publisher and all our work is done electronically; we do not accept paper submissions.
Please be sure your submission has been thoroughly self-edited (and we highly recommend having frank critique partners look at it!), and has been proofread by someone other than yourself. It should be free of typos and grammatical errors. We do not specify a required format and your manuscript will not be rejected due to formatting. We suggest using one-inch margins and a variable-space, easy to read font (such as Times Roman, Arial, Book Antiqua).
Notice for previously published authors: We will only consider your out-of-print books if you hold exclusive rights.
No manuscript will be considered that is in any way demeaning to an individual or group of people.
Although the line between erotica and pornography is oftentimes a fuzzy one, here are the big no-nos that we don’t feel fuzzy about in the slightest:
• NO pedophilia.
• NO incest.
• NO rape as titillation. Rape may be used as part of the plot action, especially supporting character development, but MAY NOT be presented in a positive light or with the intent to stimulate erotic excitement or pleasure. The hero may not be a rapist.
• NO bodily functions as sexual activity (e.g., “golden showers”).
• NO necrophilia.
• NO guns, knives or other weapons stuffed in various parts of the female anatomy. It’s sad that this even has to be stated, but there it is.
• NO bestiality. This rule refers to common animals indigenous to Earth; this does not apply to shapeshifting protagonists and sentient “otherworldly” humanoid animals in sci-fi or fantasy.
Note: We are a publisher of electronic books (although most of our titles are also issued in print). We do almost all our work electronically; we communicate via e-mail. Editors and authors exchange

~ must fit our definition of erotic romance
~ 10K to 15K word count
~ Any genre; we need a mix of genres for each volume. For these anthologies, no extreme BDSM, female/female, femdom.
~ NO excess violence/gore, rape
~ The contract for these special anthologies is not negotiable. Grant of publishing rights is for life of copyright. Royalties per author are: Digital - 6.25% of Cover price; Print - 1.25% of Cover price less credited returns. Please do not submit a story if you are not willing to accept these contract terms.

Authors will be notified at end of calendar year.
Ellora’s Cave Theme Series
Several times a year we do a month of special themed erotic short stories. Guidelines:
~ Word count: 10K to 30K
~ Any genre (except f/f or femdom)
~ Highly erotic, the hotter the better
~ The story must significantly include the theme
For 2010, our themes are about the arts:

May: “Poetic Passion”: poetry/drama (no TV or movies) – submission deadline October 31, 2009

November: “Musical Magic”: music/song – submission deadline April 30, 2010
When submitting, put “theme Submission: title” in the email message subject line. Attach a synopsis and the full story (since it is a short story).
Ellora’s Cave EXOTIKA
Quality erotica stories for women. Guidelines:
~ 10K to 120K word count
~ Any genre
~ Must be very hot and erotic
~ The focus is on the sexual relationship and activities, the “sexual journey” or adventure.
~ May certainly have romantic elements, but doesn't have to be a "romance"—that is, the story does not have to focus on the development of a romantic relationship, hero and heroine don't have to be sexually faithful to each other, does not need a committed-couple HEA ending.
~ Sexual content follows the same rules as EC. We may be willing to stretch a bit further—but hey, we already go almost to the limit with EC erotic romances. Same taboo list: no pedophilia, incest, necrophilia, bodily functions, rape. Our market segment and our primarily female audience want quality erotica, not violence or extreme kink. Definitely no porn.
~ Kink is fine; no fetish.
~ Must be well-written and with a well-developed plot and characterization!
When submitting, put “Exotika Submission: title” in the email message subject line.
ECPI has had admirable success with reissuing previously published titles from established, best-selling authors. (The author must have regained exclusive rights in order to re-sell to us.) At our Cerridwen imprint, we have titles from Bertrice Small, Madeline Baker, Laurie Breton, Susan Sizemore, Roberta Gellis—and more in the works. These books are first released in digital, then quickly made available in print. New and old fans of authors appreciate this wonderful opportunity to buy backlist books that were out of print, now available as e-books and high-quality trade paperbacks.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I submit my manuscript to EC, what are the chances it will be published?
This fluctuates, so it’s a difficult question to answer. Overall, we currently have an acceptance rate of roughly 4% for unsolicited submissions, which is very high for the industry.
Do I need an agent to submit a manuscript to EC?
No. Although some of our authors have agents, it is not necessary to have one in order to submit a manuscript to us for consideration.
How do I submit to Ellora’s Cave or Cerridwen Press?
Electronic submissions only; no paper. Authors must be competent in MSWord, comfortable with email and online discussion loops. Read and follow the instructions contained in this document.
How long does it take to find out whether my manuscript has been accepted or rejected?
It depends on many factors, the most important one being how busy we are at the time we receive it. Submissions typically receive an initial response within six weeks. For those submissions selected for additional consideration, final decision could be one to twelve months.
What are Ellora’s Cave’s contract terms?
Full contract supplied for review upon acceptance of story.
Royalties: 37.5% for digital releases; 7.5 % for print books.
Length of grant of publishing rights: Life of copyright
Includes digital, print, audio, translation, and secondary/subsidiary rights.
Royalty payments contractually guaranteed quarterly, but in actuality we have always paid monthly.
How much money can I expect to make at EC?
That varies greatly from author to author. Royalty payments depend largely upon how many titles you have placed with us, how popular those titles become with readers, and how well you market your stories. It is important to remember that it takes an extreme amount of popularity with readers and quite a few available titles to make enough money at writing to live off the income, but we most certainly do have authors who make a VERY cushy living here.
I don’t live in the United States. Can I still write for Ellora’s Cave, Inc.?
We have authors located in Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. If your bank will accept checks in U.S. dollars drawn on an American bank, then yes, you can. We pay only by mailed paper check, no electronic payments. Bank fees are author’s responsibility.
Linden Bay Romance
Linden Bay is a publishing company offering romance and cross-genre romance books in electronic formats and trade paperback. We are a royalty paying publisher with no fees paid by authors, and are included on the Romance Writers of America's list of non-Vanity, non-Subsidy publishers. Extensive editing and proofreading services are provided on each accepted manuscript. We also offer professional cover art, an ISBN number, distribution to sales and review sites, and support on author involvement in promotion.
Royalties: are typically about 37% of gross depending on proceeds for every e-book sale and 25% of net proceeds on every print sale.
Contract: Authors will receive a formal contract upon acceptance.
GENERAL SUBMISSIONS ARE CLOSED UNTIL FUTHER NOTICE!
Accept submissions for unpublished works.
Linden Bay is a strictly romance publisher only. All works should remain in a light tone. Novels should focus on the developing relationship between the central adult characters as they discover their attraction to each other. Passion is paramount, and stories that contain a high level of unresolved sexual tension are given particular attention. Sex scenes can range from mildly erotic to very erotic, and can be as graphic as the story and the author's style deem appropriate.
Please note: Sex between consenting adults only. We do not accept any submissions containing sex with minors (under 18 years).
Most interested in fast-paced, escapist stories and require that all have an HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happy for now) ending. Whether a light contemporary with comedic elements or a serious historical filled with drama, all manuscripts should conclude on a positive note. The hero(es) should be admirable enough for the reader to fall in love with as the story unfolds, but flawed enough to feel authentic. The heroine should be a woman the reader can relate to as she struggles with her own inner conflicts and, like the hero(es), learns to overcome her personal challenges.
How To Submit:
As an internet based publisher, all our submissions are handled electronically, so please do not send a hard copy submission as it will not be processed. An initial submission email query should be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line: NEW SUBMISSION
The following should be included in the body of the e-mail.
1. A paragraph giving an overview of your writing background with a list of any previous published works including dates of publication and publisher. Please give basic personal details: full legal name, pseudonym, home address, and telephone.
2. An outline of the promotional efforts you intend to make for this book. 3. A synopsis of sufficient length to explain the story. Should be a minimum of 2 pages and include how the story ends. Please indicate word count within the synopsis, and the heat level you would rate the book based on the LBR heat scale found on the bottom of our home page.
4. The first three chapters. If this novel is one you would rate a 3 or higher, please be sure to also include the first scene in the book where the hero and heroine are physically intimate, and indicate where this occurs in the storyline (starts at 16,758 or 51,500 words -or- page 43 of 186 pages).
The submissions process normally takes 6-8 weeks, but can vary based on current volume. You will receive an acknowledgment of receipt within one business day. If we feel the story will fit well with our catalogue, you will be contacted and asked to send the entire manuscript for review. In this case, please review our formatting requirements and prepare your manuscript accordingly. They are outlined in our Manuscript Preparation Guide. The guide also offers tips on what our editors look for when prepping a manuscript.
